"I like Texans. I like Texans because they are the only other Americans who are as "charmingly" arrogant as Californians." Polly Counts
Yup you guessed it, I am from Southern California. Born and raised in Oceanside, I enjoyed easy beach access, a mellow lifestyle and great weather all year around.
Even though the SoCal lifestyle was grand, in April of 2000 I decided to join the navy and see the world. This was a great experience because I found that there were so many other styles, points of view, ideas that I, as an "open minded Californian", had no clue about!
So what does this all mean? It means that I am going to draw from my travels and experiences to write about one aspect of my discoveries.
Style.
In America there are so many subcultures. The subculture styles are often overlooked, mocked, feared, copied, etc.
I remember reading an Article in the 1990s about Gwen Stefani. Of course she talked about her music, but she also discussed how she put together her wardrobe. She said that she loved the way the chicanas dressed and did their make up, and incorporated some of their fasihon-savvy into her own style.
Having been raised in SoCal, I knew divesity and I've seen Chicana style. Chicanas, at the time, used dark eyeliner and lipliner, they also wore specific clothing according to the neighborhood they lived in. Until this article came out I would have never guessed that the Chicana subculture influenced fashion icon, Gwen Stefani's, style! It gave me a whole new perspective and appreciation of what other groups had to offer, and I slowly tried to incorporate some of these unique findings into my own style.
So the goal of my blog is to point out observations on the style of subcultures, and celebrate it! We can always use a new fashion tip, right?
So I'm realizing that we have a few things in common, learning about other people and cultures, and style! I really like the format of your blog, it's different and interesting. And I also really like the way you write. :) I think one of the best things we could all do to improve ourselves is learn about others. Submerse ourselves into other cultures and gain new experiences. Seems like you have that figured out.
